Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar today flagged off India’s only trekking competition ‘The Silk Route’ – “The Himalayan Expedition” from the historic Ridge in Shimla today.
On the occasion, the Governor said that the Silk Route was a historic trade route that dated from the second century B.C. until the 14th century A.D. It stretched from Asia to the Mediterranean, traversing China, India, Persia, Arabia, Greece, and Italy. He added that it was dubbed the Silk Route as of the heavy silk trading that took place during that period. He said that it was the main trading route through Rampur, Narkanda, Shimla, Kalka and Delhi. With passage of time and development of roads this old route is forgotten and has become history, he added.
He expressed happiness that by organizing such a thrilling event, it will be helpful in reviving the old forgotten Silk Route. He hoped that it would be a more eventful competition and gave best wishes to all the participants.
